Ductwork is easy to forget about because it’s hidden — but it carries every bit of air your system heats or cools, and buildup inside it affects both air quality and system performance. Here’s what to watch for.
If more than one of these signs sounds familiar, it’s worth having a technician actually look inside the system with a proper air duct cleaning inspection.
1. Visible Dust Blowing From Vents
If you see a puff of dust when the system kicks on, or notice dust resettling on surfaces shortly after cleaning, your ducts may be redistributing what they’re holding onto every cycle.
2. Musty or Stale Odor When the System Runs
A smell that’s only noticeable when the AC or heat is running — not present when the system is off — often points to dust, debris, or mold growing somewhere inside the ductwork rather than in the room itself.
3. Increased Allergy or Respiratory Symptoms Indoors
If allergy symptoms are worse at home than elsewhere, especially right after the system runs, contaminated ductwork is a common but overlooked cause.
4. Visible Mold Near Vents or Registers
Mold around a vent cover is a strong sign of moisture inside the duct system, which needs to be addressed at the source, not just wiped off the visible surface.
5. Rodent or Pest Evidence
Ductwork running through attics, basements, or crawlspaces can become a nesting spot. Debris, nesting material, or droppings near vents are a sign the whole system needs inspection, not just cleaning.
6. It’s Simply Been a Long Time
If you don’t know when — or if — your ducts have ever been cleaned, and you’ve lived in the home more than a few years, that alone is reason enough to have them inspected.
What Cleaning Actually Involves
Professional duct cleaning uses specialized vacuum equipment to remove buildup throughout the entire system — not just what’s visible at the vent — including the trunk lines and the coil area where debris often collects most.
