Signs Your AC Is Dying: Repair vs. Replace

Signs Your AC Is Dying: Repair vs. Replace

Every AC eventually reaches a point where fixing it stops making financial sense. The trick is knowing when you’ve actually crossed that line, instead of guessing.

If your system is checking two or more boxes below, it’s worth getting a real quote for AC installation before you spend more on repairs than the unit is worth.

The Age Test

Most AC systems last 12–15 years with regular maintenance. If yours is past 12 and needing repairs, replacement starts making more sense — you’re investing in a system that’s already near the end of its useful life either way.

The 50% Rule

A common industry guideline: if a repair costs more than 50% of the price of a new system, replace instead of repair. A compressor or coil replacement on an old unit can easily hit that threshold.

Rising Energy Bills

If your bills are climbing even though your usage hasn’t changed, your system is losing efficiency — working harder to produce the same cooling. Newer systems can cut cooling costs significantly, which offsets the upfront cost over time.

Frequent Repairs

One repair a year is normal wear and tear. Two or more repairs in a single season is a pattern — and usually a sign that something more fundamental is failing.

R-22 Refrigerant Systems

If your system uses R-22 (common in units installed before 2010), refrigerant is expensive and increasingly hard to source since it was phased out. A leak in an R-22 system often makes replacement the more practical option over an expensive recharge.

Uneven Cooling or Constant Running

If some rooms are never comfortable no matter how long the system runs, or it runs almost continuously in summer, it may be undersized, failing, or both.

Get an Honest Answer

The right call depends on your specific system’s age, repair history, and the actual quote in front of you — not a rule of thumb. We’ll look at your system and tell you straight whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your situation.
