The standard recommendation is a professional visit twice a year — once in spring for cooling, once in fall for heating. That’s the right default for most homes, but a few situations call for more frequent attention.

Why Twice a Year Is the Baseline
Most residential systems run two distinct sides — cooling in summer, heating in winter — and each has its own components that wear differently and benefit from a pre-season check (see our spring vs. fall breakdown for specifics).
When You Might Need More Frequent Visits
- An older system (12+ years): Components wear faster and more unpredictably as a system ages, so more frequent eyes on it catch problems sooner.
- A system with a known recurring issue: If you’ve had a specific repair before — a refrigerant leak that was patched, for example — a follow-up check makes sense sooner than the standard interval.
- Heavy usage: A heat pump running year-round for both heating and cooling logs more hours than a furnace or AC used seasonally, and can benefit from a mid-season check on top of spring/fall visits.
- A newly purchased home: If you don’t know the system’s maintenance history, an initial inspection soon after moving in establishes a baseline, even outside the normal seasonal schedule.
What “Skipping a Cycle” Actually Costs
Missing one seasonal visit rarely causes an immediate failure — but small issues (a slightly low refrigerant charge, a fraying electrical connection, a dirtying coil) compound over a missed cycle, showing up later as a bigger repair or a mid-season breakdown.
The Simple Rule
Twice a year, on schedule, for most homes. Add a visit if your system is older, has a known issue, or runs harder than typical.
